CAF May Ban Towels After AFCON Row

The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Referees Committee, Olivier Safari, has suggested that the governing body may review regulations surrounding the use of towels by goalkeepers following the controversy that erupted during the recent Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

The issue first surfaced during Nigeria’s semi-final clash against hosts Morocco, when Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali was repeatedly distracted by stadium officials who interfered with his towels—a scene that quickly went viral on social media.

The situation escalated during the final, again involving the host nation. Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy was subjected to similar interference, with Moroccan ball boys, stewards and even players repeatedly handling or removing his towels. One notable incident involved Africa Footballer of the Year Achraf Hakimi, who was caught on camera taking Mendy’s towel.

The disruption forced Senegal’s reserve goalkeeper, Yehvann Diouf, to step in and help safeguard Mendy’s towels during the match.

However, the intervention only worsened the situation, as Diouf was chased around the pitch by stewards and ball boys before being forcibly removed, leading to further chaotic scenes.

Despite the distractions, Senegal went on to win the title in dramatic fashion. However, the incidents could still result in sanctions for Teranga Lions supporters, head coach Pape Thiaw and the Senegal Football Federation.

Speaking to Canal+ Afrique, Safari addressed the issue and hinted at possible regulatory changes that could spark further debate.

“This is a problem the organisers must take into account in future competitions,” Safari said.

“A towel is not equipment for a player or a goalkeeper. When a goalkeeper carries a towel, it must be done in a sporting and fair-play manner. Once it is used to shout instructions or influence the game, I believe that towel should be removed from the playing area.”
